Preserving History, Powering Security: Region 6 Systems Integration and the Seattle Center Monorail
The Vision: Preserving an Iconic Seattle Landmark
For decades, the historic Seattle Center Monorail has been an iconic fixture of the Pacific Northwest. Built for the 1962 World’s Fair, this unique, one-mile transit link bridges two worlds. It’s a dedicated historic landmark that still operates its original trains, including the famous red train once ridden by Elvis Presley, while also serving as a fully functioning public transit system.
Owned by the City of Seattle and operated by Seattle Monorail Services (SMS) since 1994, the system continues to serve as a vital link between downtown and the Seattle Center. In 2025, the Monorail carried 2.3 million passengers with 99.9% performance reliability, demonstrating its important role in Seattle’s transit and tourism infrastructure. Seattle Center Monorail’s operations and maintenance facilities, as well as their two stations, required a security upgrade that brought their technology into the 21st century while protecting both the system’s historic charm and the people who rely on it for transportation.
The SMS team knew that finding the line between historic preservation and modern technology would require a partner committed to localized support, aesthetic sensitivity, and alignment with complex local and federal compliance requirements. For over a decade, Region 6 Systems Integration has been proud to be that partner, helping SMS find the perfect blend of historic and contemporary to keep their property and patrons secure.
The Challenge: Navigating Oversight and Retrofitting History
Upgrading security at Seattle Center Monorail meant more than installing new technology. As a historic public transit system, the Monorail must balance preservation with modern safety and security needs — all under oversight from agencies including the Federal Transit Administration, Transportation Security Administration, Washington State Department of Transportation, Seattle Department of Transportation, and others.
Any upgrade had to meet strict regulatory, operational, and hazard-mitigation requirements while fitting seamlessly into a 64-year-old landmark. Region 6 was tasked with designing solutions that strengthened security without disrupting service, compromising compliance, or detracting from the Monorail’s historic character.
The Region 6 Approach: Building a Relationship on Trusted Advocacy
For nearly a decade, Region 6 has served as a trusted advisor and security integrator for Seattle Center Monorail. Led by Tyler Roach and Manny Saldaña, the collaboration has been rooted in collaborative planning, innovative problem-solving, face-to-face brainstorming, and solutions tailored to the Monorail’s unique operating environment.
Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, Region 6 works closely with the Monorail team to evaluate new mandates, policy changes, or technological options as they emerge. Region 6 helps assess feasibility, infrastructure impact, and budget so each investment improves security, supports compliance, and minimizes disruption to daily operations.
"I think what I love most about Manny and Tyler is that there's no question that is a bad question or a dumb question. They spent a lot of time helping us understand what options we had for the system, and then scaling and tailoring those solutions to meet our needs."— Megan Ching, President, Seattle Monorail Services
The Solution: Modern Security Designed for a Historic System
Over the course of their decade-long partnership, Region 6 has designed and implemented several iterations of an extensive, non-intrusive surveillance and access control network from the ground up. The custom-tailored solution includes:
● Strategic, Scaled Surveillance: A comprehensive network of security cameras that eliminated the property’s previous blind spots, increasing visibility across the system.
● Proactive Equipment Lifecycles: Proactive replacement of aging or obsolete equipment to maintain reliability and avoid reactive failures.
● Cloud and Mobile Integration: Real-time visibility that allows the team to view security cameras and manage access control directly from their smartphones, ensuring a prompt response when an incident arises.
● Localized Support: A Seattle-area partner able to respond quickly to service needs and collaborate in person when needed. Region 6 technicians are just minutes away, enabling rapid responses to service needs.
The Result: Smart Campus, Preserved Legacy
The Monorail’s security posture has shifted from reactive coverage to stronger situational awareness, helping protect passengers, staff, and facilities while preserving the system’s historic identity. Region 6’s non-intrusive approach showed that a legacy transit system can meet modern security expectations without sacrificing the character that makes it iconic.
The true impact of this collaboration is the deeply trusted, enduring partnership between Region 6 and the Seattle Center. Ensuring that the small but mighty team operating Seattle Center Monorail felt uniquely valued, respected, and heard through every step of the process, Region 6 has established itself as a reliable extension of the Monorail’s operations.
"I always feel like I have a good partner at the table that can help me weigh out options and give me a range of different possibilities, which is great. And I don't necessarily know that you would find that in other companies out there where you're just a client with a number assigned to you."— Megan Ching, President, Seattle Monorail Services
The Seattle Center Monorail project demonstrates how thoughtful security integration can support compliance, strengthen operations, and preserve the identity of a historic property. Region 6 helps organizations modernize with solutions that are practical, responsive, and tailored to their environment.
